Why every new garage needs to think about EVs now
New Zealand's electrical wiring rules changed at the end of 2025, and it's reshaping how garages get built. A normal wall socket won't be good enough for charging a car in an enclosed garage. It needs to be properly wired for it instead, with its own dedicated circuit built specifically for vehicle charging.
It’s one of the more useful changes coming through the building world in a while. EV numbers are climbing fast, up 96% on last year so far in 2026, and charging at home is one of the cheapest, cleanest ways to run a car here, especially with how much of our power already comes from renewables. Wiring a garage properly from the start avoids a messy, expensive job later: ripping open the switchboard, running new wiring, sometimes even digging up the driveway, all to add power for a car that could have been planned for from day one.
It gets even better paired with solar panels. Most solar power gets made during the day, right when a car is often sitting in the driveway doing nothing. Newer systems can automatically charge the car whenever power is cheapest or the sun’s shining hardest, turning free daytime sun into free driving. Some setups go further still, sending power from the car’s battery back into the house, working almost like a battery pack for the home that happens to have wheels.
A bit of planning now means nobody’s digging up a driveway in five years just to keep up with where cars are headed.
